Second
Sunday
Second Sunday is a
ministry to Galveston’s
working poor that takes place quarterly at St. Vincent’s Episcopal House. We collect and distribute
clothing, food, toiletries, cleaning supplies, and other necessities to
families in need. We place a
high priority on maintaining human dignity while not promoting
materialism.
We aim to bring the
ministry of our congregation outside the walls of the church and into the
streets where it is most needed.
We are not seeking to “bring people up to our level,”
but rather to learn from and build relationships with people on the
margins of society.
Believing that it is
just as important to receive as it is to give, we aim to create an
atmosphere where we can sit down, share a meal, and talk with the people
that come and partake.
We will caravan down
to St. Vincent’s House (2817
Post Office) following the church service on the second Sundays of
January, March, June, and September.
Donations are accepted year round for the following items:
Used Clothing
Fair Trade produce
Trans Fair USA, Equal Exchange, Enough for Everyone
Personal Hygiene Items
Household Cleaning Supplies
Children’s Books and School Supplies
Sandwiches, Healthy Snacks, and Drinks
Bibles (preferably the Message translation)
Please remember to
purchase items that are environmentally friendly. Also, focus on items
that are truly beneficial to the working poor and marginalized
individuals of our community.
Volunteers are needed
to set up tables, help with distribution, welcome participants, and sit
and talk with people.
